Exposition peinture : Gabriel Loppe, artiste au sommet

ExhibitionFrom to

To mark the centenary of his disappearance, the valley of Chamonix is paying tribute to the Alpine painter, Gabriel Loppé.

The painter Gabriel Loppé (1825-1913) lived through the Golden Age of alpinism, that of the conquest of Alpine summits at the end of the 19th century, while Mont-Blanc had become “the playground of Europe” according to the famous phrase coined by Leslie Stephen. Captivated by the magic of mountain landscapes, he transported his easel to the tops of mountains where no artist had yet imagined being able to work.

This exhibition, Gabriel Loppé, artist on the heights, is the second great retrospective after “Mountain Journeys, Gabriel Loppé” in 2005-2006 hosted by the museums of Annecy, Chambéry and Gap.

For the first time in Chamonix canvases, drawings, engravings from the collections of the Friends of Old Chamonix have been brought together from the collections of the Friends of Old Chamonix, from individual collections and from the Alpine Museum. More than fifty works are on display. At the Alpine Museum travel across the Massif du Mont-Blanc, admire the gaping crevasses in the glaciers, let yourself be wrapped up by the clouds, stop off at the cabin of the Grands Mulets and, as a reward for such efforts, you will arrive at the summit of Mont-Blanc at sunset.

Discover glacial lakes, snowy valleys, lakes and rivers demonstrating the effects of snow. The canvases invite you to discover other horizons, Loppé’s journeys. Finish in a more intimate way in his studio where there are at least ten drawings and engravings belonging to the collections in the Alpine Museum: there are sketches and studies sometimes used for the composition of a picture.
