Spring in Chamonix

A season to discover As the snow melts, the marmots awake, the first Soldanella lift their delicate heads, the larch trees adorn soft, fresh green needles and the Valley embraces the arrival of spring!

Events

Our Spring rendez-vous: "The Science Festival" from the 23rd to the 3rd May on the theme of 'Borders'.

For the 20th year, Chamonix encourages this annual meeting between international scientists and a public of all ages, in an informal, convivial atmosphere. Debates, films, encounters, workshops, entertainment, scientific and artistic shows, field trips, are once again offered this year.

Other events and exhibitions may be consulted on the agenda.

Take to the heights...

the lifts The Grands Montets ski area : enjoy the pleasures of spring skiing right through until the 9th May at the Grands Montets. The "free ride day" takes place on the 2nd May this year - lots of fun for all the family !

The Aiguille du Midi cable car : embark in the Aiguille du Midi cable car and you enter the realm of the 'high mountains' where you may contemplate a unique and breath taking panorama of the French, Swiss and Italian Alps.

Panoramic Mont-Blanc : from the summit of the Aiguille du Midi, the Panoramic Mont Blanc gondola offers a bird's eye view of the Géant glacier as you traverse across to Helbronner point in Italy. Opening on May 28th.

The Montenvers Train : this delightful cog railway which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, winds its way up through larch forests to the Montenvers station at 1913m. An exceptional panorama overlooking the Mer de Glace, the splendid Drus and Aiguille Verte peaks. The famous Ice Grotto offers a trip into the heart of the glacier. The ice grotto is close from May 31st to June 11th.

How about sport?

Hiking and Mountain-biking Chamonix offers a wide number of hiking and mountain biking trails at a relatively low altitude, either along the valley floor or the flanks of the valley, which enable you to discover the local heritage: delighful villages, chapels, oratories, ancient bread ovens... Trails which follow the banks of the river Arve, the 'Petits Balcons', the Bois du Bouchet, the Argentière morraine, to mention but a few.

At altitude, access to trails depends upon snow conditions. It is preferable to contact the, opposite the Saint Michel Church, who will advise you on the best and safest itineraries for this time of year. This service also provides weather forecasts, maps, guide books, cassettes, but above all, invaluable first-hand information.
Other mountain sports Depending on your dates of stay and weather conditions, the following sports activities may be available. Contact the mountain professionals:

Open air activities Golfing in Chamonix : 18 hole golf course in Les Praz, 3 km from Chamonix.
Practice and reception open every day from 8:30 to 19:00.

Leisure Park at les Planards : numerous activities like summer sled.

Panoramic Flights : For the experience of a life time, take a helicopter flight in the Mont-Blanc Massif and discover the extraordinary beauty of those prestigious summits, imposing north faces and spectacular ice falls.

Cinéma Vox : Several showings daily Programme on line.

Bowling : open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 20:00 to 2:00. Closed from June 15th to July 2nd.

Casino : Open all year round.
Slot machines open from 11:00 to 2:00, until 3:00 on week-ends and evenings prior to public holidays.
Games tables open from 21:00 to 2:00. Open on Sunday from 17:00 to 2:00.
Identification must be presented on entry. Adults only.

A wide choice of bars and restaurants and night clubs open during the months of May and June.
